Over the weekend I have been working on a bit of my homework; and actually homework I really enjoy doing! I started out previously by doing some research in the preparation for my new project. I utilized shopping and the internet to do this. Definitely not a bad gig! People get paid to do this type of work within more fields than just fashion too!
I had gotten some great inspiration through my searching and came up with further concepts after shopping for fabric yesterday. I went to Hancock and JoAnn Fabric. Needless to say, my luck was found at JoAnn, as usual! I found a black (once again, NEUTRAL!), ponte knit to use for my future maxi dress. According to fabric.com, "Ponte knits are "stable" knits - in essence they have a nominal amount of stretching capability. Ponte knits are seasonless and extremely travel-friendly, as they resists wrinkles and crease." Because of this, my dress will not turn out "beachy" as we often times envision but more so something that will wear well for casual to formal occasions.
I came up with a couple different sketches of my ideas after all of this configuration.
Take into consideration, we are taking the dress I made last week and modifying. For my first sketch, I shortened the sleeve above the elbow and transformed the boat neck into a scoop neck. I also cinched in the area between the end of the rib cage and above the hip (smallest area) using elastic casing. The dress drapes down and has a slit going to up below the knee.
My second sketch has short sleeves, scoop neck, and sash around the waist. I really want to emphasize that area to create a bit more shape since this fabric is a little heavier knit.
We will see where tomorrow brings us with these sketches, fabric and Christopher's mentoring:)
